This powerful video-based HIV/AIDS program raises awareness and promotes prevention by putting a face on HIV/AIDS. It's adaptable for a variety of youth settings—from classrooms to community centers.
Approved by the New York City Department of Education, this program includes the compelling 14-minute documentary Ali Gertz: In Her Own Words and a companion lesson guide.
The video provides an intimate view of one young woman's battle with HIV. It chronicles the last four years of Alison Gertz's life—from shortly after her diagnosis with HIV at the age of 22 to her death in 1992 at the age of 26.
The companion lesson guide is designed to help educators reinforce the messages of the video and explore the issues it raises. It offers the basic facts on HIV/AIDS, including statistics in youth and HIV. It includes video discussion questions and exercises that engage participants. And it provides handouts, additional resources, and ideas for young people about how they can get involved in the fight against HIV.
You can purchase the video and lesson guide by completing the downloadable form (open) or by calling the Love Heals office at 212/529-7935. A single copy is available free of charge to each New York City public school.
"My story has shaken up almost everyone who has heard it. People are still not having safe sex and still thinking that it can't happen to them."
– Ali Gertz, 1966-1992
